Port of Newport
International Terminal
Redevelopment

The Port of Newport’s International Terminal Redevelopment Project has received the National Phoenix Award. The Port of Newport’s team is joining a distinguished group of organizations who can proudly say they have won a Phoenix Award for excellence in Brownfield redevelopment. The Phoenix Award means that the unique and difficult project completed was among the best of the best when it comes to the remediation of an environmentally impacted site and transformed the site into a significant community asset.

This project is recognized for the removal of approximately 6,000 tons contaminated materials (soil, sediments and water treatment), recycling, and reuse of materials generated from the removal of two World War II era concrete cargo ships that where scuttled, sunk, and used as loading docks. This project salvaged more than $896,000 worth of scrap steel. The project also recycled nearly 10,000 cubic yards of the concrete generated from the removal of the S.S. Pasley and the partial removal of the S.S. Hennebique as a base material for the new state of the art dock facility. Additionally, the removed asphalt from the old dock area was recycled. The Phoenix Awards are awarded by a nonprofit entity, The Phoenix Awards Institute, Inc.
